General Notes:

As yet, little is documented as to the ancestry and siblings of Washington Allen. Speculation, but no documented proof supports information that this family came to GA from Virginia by way of South Carolina and Wilkes Co. GA before settling in Chambers and Cain Districts following the Cherokee Land Lotteries. Washington Allen had been raised in the tanning business and farming. He first appears in the Ga Census in 1830.

He had a plantation of 668 acres in 1860 - Hog Mountain District and owned slaves. This area of the county is now known as Dacula, GA

Washington Allen was in the final Land Lottery 275 - Chambers District 4th District. He owned land in Dist 250 created in February 1796.



Washington Allen had been farming and learning the early techniques of tanning various hides and early manufacturing of leather products. This trade was perfected and passed on to his sons which flourished for many generations.

At age 21, RH volunteered for the Confederacy from July 18, 1863 -1864 and served as a 5th Sergeant, Troop H, 10th Cavalry, State Guards. He also served as First Corporal, Confederacy, Troop K, 16th Battalion, GA Cavalry, Later known 13th Georgia Cavalry



Attended to by Mr. Hutchie Thomas, with Goat Cart as he became lame in later years.

Robert H. Allen, b 1841, first son of Washington and Biddie Mackin Allen, m Emily Amelia Hadaway. Their only child was Cora Amelia Allen, b 1866. They lived in the Dacula area of Gwinnett.



During the Civil War, R.H. Allen served in the 18th Georgia Cavalry as a corporal. After the war he joined Adam Poole on muleback to seek new homes and opportunities. Their objective was to locate a high ridge, where reportedly a railroad was to be built. Their brave trip through wooded Indian trails led them to a site on the highest hills in northern Gwinnett, where they decided to build their homes. In less than three years, their location had become Buford's Main Street. Their homes and stores faced the "Air Line Ridge" that brought the railroad in 1972 near their front porches.



In 1867, "Mr. R.H." established in his backyard the first industry in Buford, called the Harness Shop. In 1873, he was joined by his brother, Bonaparte Allen, who had been living in Rome, Georgia. Bona operatred the tannery and together they built the Bona Allen Co., which by 1900, was known all over the world for its saddles, harnesses and horse collars. Even during the Depression, Bona Allen employed over 2,200 people as Gwinnetts largest employer. "



It would be safe to say, if it were not for brother Robert H. Allen his hard work, diligence and foresight the economic landscape of Buford over the last 130 years would have been quite different and the effects of the Great Depression would have been much worse for its inhabitants. R.H. deserved more credit than he received over the years for the business that flourished for so long.

Clarence Lester Allen, the eldest of Bona Allen Sr. sons, with an adventurous spirit went out on his own into the world of business to seek his own fortune. He was dubbed the "maverick" he went into business competing in a way with the Allen Family business. His ventures took him to New Orleans, Louisiana ,and Lawrenceville, Buford, and Gainesville, Georgia.

In addition to his tough business sense and success with Bona Allen, Inc. John served his community in many ways as Mayor 1907 -1910, as Councilman and City Commissioner.



John was quite spirited as he shared his passion of business and sport with his brother Victor. Together, they promoted the Bona Allen Shomaker semi-pro baseball team and the family business through the depression years.



Many people have made the assumption that his middle name was Quincey, not so, the name is Quinton. The marriage license to Catherine Angeline "Kate" Shadburn and family Bible documentation bears this out.

Bett Pierce Allen, 74, of Alpharetta, passed away early Monday morning, June 30, after a lengthy illness in North Fulton Regional Hospital. She had returned to the Atlanta area with her husband of 57 years, Bill Allen. Before she retired in 1999, Mrs. Allen had her own therapeutic practice, Program Plus, in Glen Saint Mary, FL. She was chosen by her peer group, NAADAC as Counselor of the Year with emphasis on Lifetime Achievement. She was internationally certified in addiction counseling. She was also a Fellow of the American Clinical Hypnosis Institute and certified in Criminal Justice counseling. Mrs. Allen studied under Virginia Satir, Dr. Stanley Gitlow, Dr. Jokichi Takumine and other pioneers in family therapy. She was on the leading edge of recognizing damage done to offspring and spouses of addicts, and the growth of what is now familiar as "Adult Child" therapy. Dr. Marilyn Volker of Miami University said today: "Bett Allen was a Star!!! Now, she is a STAR!!!". Mrs. Allen devoted the first 25 years of her married life to homemaking, raising three sons, Michael, Keith and Victor, now deceased. She also enthusiastically accompanied her writer husband on magazine assignments. She began her career as a therapist in the late 1970's in Baker County, FL, and then Jacksonville. She was a graduate of O'Keefe and Sacred Heart High School and married in 1946. Her death came on her 57th wedding anniversary. She is survived by her husband, Bill, and her sons, Michael Rece Allen and Keith Patrick Allen, both of Alpharetta; her brother, James Franklin Pierce of Centerpoint, TX; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Keith and friend Geoff Marrotte started a small independent commercial refuse business, A&M Enterprises in the early 1970's on the south side of Atlanta (Tara Blvd.) The business succeeded and through hard work, long early to late hours, dedication, and good business sense. The partnership dissolved and the business was acquired by a larger conglomerate. Keith and wife, Courtenay went into the leather and luggage repair business and branched out into the handcrafting of leather specialty items.

Their businesses have flourished. In 2001 their companty Atlanta Luggage Repair and Leather Specialties is located in Roswell, Ga.

Keith is an avid golfer and travels to England and Scotland to play on courses there including famous St Andrews.

Notes for Victor Hugo Allen II:

General Notes:

Victor was an entertainer, storyteller, counselor, golfer and teacher.



Victor was physically unwell for all of his 48 years with us, and in spite of this, he

multiplied the five God given talents of sight, touch, smell, hearing and taste.



Never a dilletante, he involved himself in pursuits passionately. He was an accomplished entertainer from an early age, a fierce baseball, chess and billiards competitor. He was a horseman, and dog trainer. Victor was a scratch golfer, a marksman of note, an avid hunter and fisherman. Without formal training, he mastered several instruments and had a fine voice which he used to mimic some "pop" stars. He became an opera aficianado, with an overwhelming preoccupation with Luciano Pavarotti. Victor was a Life Scout. He travelled in Greece, Italy, Switzerland, France, England, Scotland.



Deepening disability and surgical procedures left him in declining health for the past several years (1998-2000), but his spirit was unflagging and he had many internet friends and contacts. His two great passions in his last years were The Atlanta Braves and Pavarotti.
