She died in Galveston, TX in the care of her brother, Ralph Pierce. She is buried in the family plot in Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville, GA.
As a young girl at age 8 she had an ear infection that abcessed and burst. The infection spread to the spine which eventually developed a form of rheumatoid arthritis.
She attended regular school for a time on crutches until an accidental fall at age 12. She never walked again.
As a patient, she was a pioneer in bone graft surgery. This was years before titanium joint replacements. Doctors attempted grafting lamb joints. They eventually failed and her joints fused in a sitting position. This was tragic and she was very brave. She never complained. She was
one of the early patients at Convalescent Childrens Hospital which became Scottish Rite Hospital.
Mr. O. B. Keeler, famous sports writer and colleague and chronicler of golfer Bobby Tyre Jones, and Mr. Eugene Gunby, Fulton County Judge, were a childhood friends of Dartrue. They met as patients at Scottish Rite Convelescent Hospital for Crippled Children, Decatur. They remained friends their entire lives.
Two prominent Atlantans, Mr. Forrest Adair (Adair Realty) and Mr. Preston Arkwright (Ga Power Co.), both Masons and supporters of the Hospital and Masons were instrumental in locating a surgeon for
the graft surgery for Aunt Dartrue. The resulting effects of the failed surgery, left Dartue an invalid for the remainder of her life. She was well cared for through a trust fund established by Mr. Arkwright and Mr. Adair. Dartrue lived in Atlanta with "Nanny Pierce" (Alice Mason Shadburn Pierce) in the 1940s. Although she was a virtual quadraplegic, she was able to travel by bus, taxi-cab, chauffer and train to visit relatives in Gainesville,GA and Knoxville, Tennessee.
Her brother, Ralph FranklinPierce devised many tools for her everyday care.
Note: O. B. Keeler was featured in the motion picture "The Legend of Bagger Vance"
Note: When he was Fulton Co. Ordinary, Judge Eugene Gunby issued the marriage license to Bill and Bett Allen in 1946. Bett is the niece of Dartrue and daughter of Ralph Franklin Pierce.

Bett Pierce Allen, 74, of Alpharetta, passed away early Monday morning, June 30, after a lengthy illness in North Fulton Regional Hospital. She had returned to the Atlanta area with her husband of 57 years, Bill Allen. Before she retired in 1999, Mrs. Allen had her own therapeutic practice, Program Plus, in Glen Saint Mary, FL. She was chosen by her peer group, NAADAC as Counselor of the Year with emphasis on Lifetime Achievement. She was internationally certified in addiction counseling. She was also a Fellow of the American Clinical Hypnosis Institute and certified in Criminal Justice counseling. Mrs. Allen studied under Virginia Satir, Dr. Stanley Gitlow, Dr. Jokichi Takumine and other pioneers in family therapy. She was on the leading edge of recognizing damage done to offspring and spouses of addicts, and the growth of what is now familiar as "Adult Child" therapy. Dr. Marilyn Volker of Miami University said today: "Bett Allen was a Star!!! Now, she is a STAR!!!". Mrs. Allen devoted the first 25 years of her married life to homemaking, raising three sons, Michael, Keith and Victor, now deceased. She also enthusiastically accompanied her writer husband on magazine assignments. She began her career as a therapist in the late 1970's in Baker County, FL, and then Jacksonville. She was a graduate of O'Keefe and Sacred Heart High School and married in 1946. Her death came on her 57th wedding anniversary. It lifts my spirits to imagine how you were hopelessly smitten and your heart was filled with love when you first laid eyes on that beautiful, blue eyed, southern spitfire.------and how she was swept away by your dashing romantic ways. You gave to her one of the most cherished gifts desired by a woman. She told me many times how grateful she was to know that she was loved dearly by one man----day after day, after day and forever. The partnership dissolved and the business was acquired by a larger conglomerate. Keith and wife, Courtenay went into the leather and luggage repair business and branched out into the handcrafting of leather specialty items.

He became an opera aficianado, with an overwhelming preoccupation with Luciano Pavarotti. Victor was a Life Scout. He travelled in Greece, Italy, Switzerland, France, England, Scotland.
Deepening disability and surgical procedures left him in declining health for the past several years (1998-2000), but his spirit was unflagging and he had many internet friends and contacts. His two great passions in his last years were The Atlanta Braves and Pavarotti.
